WB Gould, painter, arrived in Van Diemen's Land in December 1827 as a convict. In 1829 he was assigned to James Scott, colonial surgeon and amateur botanist in Hobart, and from 1832 to 1833 to Dr William de Little at Macquarie Harbour. During these two periods of assignment Gould produced watercolour studies of botanical specimens.
